"The Ball Busters"

This post was originally shared on April 30, 2013.

Ok, I know you all were waiting with your breath held for the past 2 months for me to write something truly inspirational and change your lives...well, I whiffed the ball...literally. More about that later. Get excited! I promise it's a good story!

I do apologize for the incognito act. A lot has happened in the past 2 months in all of our lives and I've sat in front of this old ibook g4 numerous times with so much to say but couldn't find the words to express what I felt. I'll attempt to cover it all in a quote my father has repeated probably a million times in my life time,

Be grateful and thankful for what you have today because in a moment, it could all be gone. Thank your lucky stars for your family because family will always love you. And never go to bed angry, because we are blessed enough to just wake up in the morning.

Sooooo, in the attempt to enjoy every day and have adventures I would like to get to the main topic of today's post....are you ready? Are you standing up??? (I never understood why when people are giving news they ask if you're sitting down...Wouldn't you want people to be standing ready to take action or jump for joy??)

I'll wait while that soaks in for a moment.

Are you done laughing yet? No? Awesome!

OK, so here's the deal. A client of mine told me about ZogSports, an adult sports league that culminates playing sports with happy hours. "The perfect way to meet people" she said. I've heard that line before and it's not always to be trusted. So, with a great friend and coworker, we registered and prepared, with obvious stretching of course, and got ready for kickball.

As I wasn't the most athletic person growing up, (here's where you add "noo, I'm SURE you were always picked first in gym class)I was completely hesitant in how I would do on my first day. With my creepy, crawly insecurities I've been able to keep at bay and slightly evict, some still made their way back in. What if I suck? What if I look like an idiot? What if my team doesn't like me? What if I can't be myself? What if they don't think I'm funny? What if I'm the fat girl who gets made fun of like those many years of primary school?

After 5 minutes of standing on the field, meeting my team, The Ball Busters, all of my fears disappeared. My team was compiled of a bunch of friends who had never played before either. Like me, they were nervous that their kickball skills were sub-par, but just wanted to have a good time. And a good time we had! Yes, I was the first one to miss the ball. Yes, I was laughed at...but more importantly, I was laughed with. I finally was able to be ME! And be accepted for being me! Someone who I spent years trying to hide, was finally let out for fresh air! It was so liberating.

Touche, Gym Teachers, Touche!

In conclusion, (that's something I haven't had to write in a while) DO! LIVE! LAUGH! BREATHE and SAY HI! What's the worst that could happen? You whiff a ball.... not, too shabby.

PS: I promise I wont make you wait 2 months for another!
